A full tournament of 32 started out in round one of the Cashel Masters on Sunday the 7th of January which witnessed some suprising pairings in the opening round.
Pascal Cleary meet Chisler Reynolds in a thrilling 3-2 victory for the Tipperary captain which diverted attention away from the World Championship darts on tv.Clubmates Ger Browne and Mick Kearney fought out another nailbiting 3-2 match that saw Mick Kearney advance and kick-start a wonderful afternoon for the Cashel man only losing out to eventual winner Donie Ryan in another classic match in the quater-finals.Kearney now forces his way back into the Tipp panel for next months All-Irelands,although hopefully not at the expense of Ger Browne who has dropped place thanks to that first round exit.
Despite only lasting two rounds,Noel Landy takes another step towards a return to the All-Ireland panel after a nine year sabbatical.
Clonmels Mick O'Connell fell at the semi-final to his nemisis Donie Ryan, having dispatched both Noel Halley and Niall Carey of the Shamrock Club very impresivly in the opening rounds.
Cashels Vinny McGeer had a great run to the quater-final with a very creditable 3-0 demolition of Carrick-on-Suirs Pascal O'Brien on the way before falling to the excelent Brendan Dunne. The Commons man ,Dunne, is a member of the all-conquering Ballingarry Darts Team currently playing out of Ambys.Five members of this team represented Tipperary in 2005 and hopefully Brendan is leading the way for a return of the Slieveardagh men back into the County scene.
Clonmel Masters winner,Donie Ryan, picked up his second ranking title of the season, although no-one made it easy for the Tipp star along the way,his last three victorties in the tournament going to the fifth leg.
The story of the day was Tom McRorys debut ranking event performance, ending in semi-final defeat to Brendan Dunne. The young Feehans player kept Cashels hope alive all the way to the last four, but unfortunatly it wasn't to be,although his showing at his home tournament puts him in a strong position to qualify for thwe Tipperary Masters.
